چکیده

By ROBERT S. EVANS, M.D., AND ROSE T. DUANE, A.B. E VIDENCE is accumulating that transfused cells are destroyed at an accelerated rate in one type of acquired hemolytic anemia. ‘ Since normal cells as well as the patient’s are involved it is evident that a hemolysin is present which is active against all erythrocytes. In the few instances in which a hemolysin has been demonstrated in vitro it has exhibited the characteristics of an immune body requiring complement for activity. 7 If an antigen, antibody reaction is the basis of hemolysis in the hemolytic anemias showing accelerated destruction of transfused cells it is not surprising that the agent has seldom been demonstrated in serum or plasma, since it is active at body temperature and would therefore be expected to become attached to the red cells as it is released. Recent investigations on the formation of antibodies have re-emphasized the importance of lymphatic tissue and lymphocytes in antibody production.8’9 Previous observations by Hektoen 10 and by Murphy and Sturm “demonstrated that sufficient irradiation of lymphatic tissue will inhibit antibody formation in animals. It seemed worth while, therefore, to observe the effect of irradiation on the hemolytic anemia in a patient in whom it had been demonstrated that normal red cells as well as her own were destroyed in vivo at an accelerated rate. Because irradiation and transfusion were followed by a remission in the severity of the disease a second patient with chronic hemolytic anemia exhibiting similar features was also exposed to irradiation. The results of these observations are reported.

Amelioration of Lipid Peroxidation and Antioxidant Enzymes Status in the Serum and Erythrocytes of Phenylhydrazine-Induced Anemic Male Rats: The Protective Role of Artichoke Extract (Cynara scolymus L.)

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic anemia is a disorder characterized by the premature erythrocytes destruction. Phenylhydrazine (PHZ) induces oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, which causes hemolytic anemia. Cynara scolymus due to its antioxidant compounds, has been used for various therapeutic purposes in traditional medicine. OBJECTIVES: The present study was designed to evalua...

Hemolysins in acquired hemolytic anemia; effect of pH on the activity in vitro of a serum hemolysin.

By J. V. DAdE, M.B., M.R.C.P. LONDON H YDROGEN ion concentration has a controlling effect upon many hemolytic systems, both simple and complex. Osbor& in 1934 reviewed the early literature on the effect of pH on the hemolysis by complement of corpuscles sensitized by hemolytic immune body. He found that the optimum reaction for the hemolysis of sheep corpuscles by guinea pig serum was about pH ...

Leptospirosis and immune-mediated hemolytic anemia: A lethal association

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is a common cause of anemia in dogs. The immune aggression towards erythrocytes can be triggered by many pathological conditions such as infection, inflammatory disease or neoplasia. Upon ruling out any eliciting conditions, a diagnosis of the primary immune-mediated disease can be made. In this particular case of severe anemia (tested positive for circul...

Protective Effect of Cynara scolymus L. on Blood Biochemical Parameters and Liver Histopathological Changes in Phenylhydrazine-induced Hemolytic Anemia in Rats

Background: Artichoke (Cynara scolymus) possesses bioactive components with antioxidant effects. This plant has been widely used in traditional medicine.  Objectives: The current study aimed to examine the protective activity of Hydroethanolic Extract of Cynara scolymus (HECS) against experimentally-induced hemolytic anemia in rats. Methods: Hemolytic anemia was induced by intraperitoneal inj...

Acquired Hemolytic Anemia I. the Relation of Erythrocyte

I T IS NOW evident that the syndrome of acquired hemolytic anemia represents a distinct entity which is separate in pathogenesis and course from the commonly described familial hemolytic jaundice. This distinction, which was recognized by the writers of the early part of the century, was lost sight of by many more recent observers, who suggested that acquired hemolytic anemia was simply a sudde...
